Deacon's Ministry

The Deacon’s ministry, as set forth in scripture, is one of sympathy, witness and service following the example of Jesus Christ. The primary responsibility is to minister to those in need within and beyond the community of faith. The deacons are a caring and nurturing arm of the church. Serving as a Deacon provides the opportunity of becoming a servant to others.

At First Presbyterian Church-Kalispell, the Deacons are organized into five ministry teams of three deacons, with each member serving a three year term.  Each year the outgoing member of the team is replaced by a new Deacon, ensuring continuity on each ministry team.  The ministry teams and Deacons currently serving are listed below:

Ministry Class of 2012 Class of 2013 Class of 2014
Leadership Doc Harkins Deb Possin Roger Brewer
Care Team Diane Melick Charlene Esch Mona McCann
Hospitality Louise McKay Eddy Lou Benson Idella Smithers
Hospital Jim Early Pat Sanders Sherry Wheeler
Remembrance Kathy Bolme Desi Brown Gloria Puckett

A brief sampling of each team’s activities is listed below:

Leadership:  Moderates monthly meetings, handles the finances and provides general support to the other teams.

Care Team:  Coordinates meals, transportation, light maintenance and other assistance for members in need of a short term helping hand.  Organizes weekly Samaritan house dinners and other outreach ministries.  Coordinates the Tree of Hope fund raiser.

Hospitality:  Coordinates the weekly coffee/snack service after church every Sunday.  Hosts funeral receptions for members of the congregation.

Hospital:  Makes daily visits to hospitalized Presbyterians at Kalispell Regional Medical Center.

Remembrance:  Organizes Deacons’ visits to members of the congregation who are homebound or in assisted living facilities.  Coordinates the annual Christmas Food Box project providing food boxes to over 50 families in need in our community.

The primary uses of funds raised by the Deacons are expenditures for the Christmas Food Boxes, Food for the Flathead Youth Home and supplies for the weekly coffee hour and funeral receptions.  The Deacons also support the following outreach ministries with monetary donations:  Flathead Food Bank, Flathead Youth Home, Habitat for Humanity, Intermountain Providence Home, Neighbors in Need, Samaritan House, Abbie Shelter and the NW Veterans Food Pantry.  Closer to home, the Deacons provide financial support to the First Presbyterian Scholarship Fund, our Youth Group and to the Pastor’s Discretionary Fund used primarily to support members of our congregation in need.

The primary sources of funds to support the work of the Deacons are the Christmas Poinsettia Memorial, donations to the Christmas Food Box fund, funeral reception donations and member donations to the Deacons.  Your donations to support the Deacon’s Ministries are always welcome and greatly appreciated.
