Music is an integral part of worship, and First Presbyterian has a long history of musical excellence.
The pipe organ at First Presbyterian was purchased and installed in the mid-1980s. It is a remarkable instrument, with a wide range of pipes, including chimes. Organist Lee Scifers leads the congregation in singing the great hymns of faith, and adds beauty to each service with his musically articulate preludes, postludes, and other special music.
A “praise team” group leads the congregation in musical worship one
Sunday a month. This group generally uses modern Christian music and is
led by a talented group of guitarists and singers.
Bill Zerwekh directs a bell choir for special occasions at the church. This wonderfully musical group adds a special touch to Advent, Christmas, and Easter seasons. The congregation is always most appreciative of the joy that the bell choir brings to the worship services in which they participate.
The chancel choir is directed and accompanied by Barbara Ludwig. The
choir consists of about 25
members at the present time. Choir practices
are held each Wednesday evening at 7:30 from September through May. The
special anthems are chosen to correlate with the scriptures, psalms, or
themes for each Sunday service. In addition to supporting the worship
service through music, the choir is a small faith community within the
larger church family, which is a wonderful thing for the choir members. One of God’s many gifts is the gift of music. Anyone who would like
to be part of these special music and worship groups is invited and
welcomed.
